that's weird… after every "final" build I woudl test to make sure most everything seemed to be good still, and I didn't come across this problem.

James has the final build now though, so that problem is fixed, supposedly.
Ok guys… James has an older burn of the game from last night, but he says there's a couple problems

1) He says that the level summary that is displayed at the start of each level is oddly seeming to be displayed partly in the "More bugs in:" indicator in the upper right corner. I dunno what would casue this, except maybe buffer overruns? I'll look at the code then.

EDIT: ok looks like this just happens at the beginning of the level… as you start… so it's annoying. but not game crashing… I'm working on it.

2) this is not as big a problem, but if we can, James would like if wall segments that block hoses would not be drawn. He thinks that the post of the next tile over that blocks it is enough, and that the wall segment that blocks the hose is not necessary and hurts the game a bit.

Ok then… see you soon!

Forum category: General / Programmer problems
Forum thread: FINAL PROBS!

OK I added a 13MB zip file named "GardenFinal.zip" at our cvs root (not in Garden2 folder) for James to unzip and burn to CDs … if anyone makes new changes to the source code, recompile the release build and replace the "Garden.exe" in there and upload to CVS again (I know using zip file is not the most efficient method ever but if I made it a new folder CVS will just stick in lots of CVS subfolders in there) … if you add new images/sounds/music modify the appropriate folder …

Forum category: General / Design
Forum thread: Done?

For reasons I don't know why, I cannot for the life of me get the victory music to play only once (same with lose music). It always plays twice, then downsizing the window makes it play again, and sometimes bringing it up again plays it again… I checked all "PlayMusic" calls, and they don't seem to be being called. If you can figure out how to fix it, tell me or do so. Otherwise, do we want victory music in or not if it's like that (lose music is longer, so it's not so apparent).

Forum category: General / BUGS
Forum thread: victory/lose music

Sweet. I like the "bugs scrambling off when shot" effect :) Do you want me to create a main menu link for the credit? Also, if you don't mind can you please make the text scrolling up rather than down?

Another suggestion, randomize the initial X coordinates for the credit bugs so that they don't look like lining up. Don't make the random range to large though in particular make sure the furthest to the right bug are not too far to the right that the text it "carries" gets cut up …

Forum category: General / Design
Forum thread: Credit info

OK I have moved most major texts used in the game into texts.h so that anyone (with access to the source code) can modify various in-game texts without hunting for them all over the cpp files. If you find other in-game texts that you think should be made accessible the same way please let me know I'll move them there into texts.h.
I was observing this push&pull for quite some time … you set the cash generation to be low and player with small gardens will struggle … set it high and you get millionaires … the keyword is: it's linear … how about thinking outside the fence: try exponential … or to be exact reverse exponential.

suppose the player have g gardens, calculate the effective cash-generating-garden-count as g^c … now, if c == 1 we get the linear proportion; what we have right now … let c = 0.75

c = 1
g = 1, g^c = 1
g = 10, g^c = 10
g = 100, g^c = 100

c = 0.75
g = 1, g^c = 1
g = 10, g^c = 5.62
g = 100, g^c = 31.62

as you would see, as garden count gets larger the generated cash doesn't grow that large. We can tweak the c value to the one we feel right. it won't be that much a trouble to implement this (only one extra variable in Board and maybe one extra tunable value in the global.xml)

Forum category: General / Design
Forum thread: Levels & Balancing

ok here is a general tip when dealing with pointers …

if the pointers are assigned using "new" commands then you need to "delete" them

if the pointers are assigned using "&" on a non-pointer variables (example: ImageX * myimage = &img_some_image) then you don't need to delete them .. in fact don't call "delete" on them since that would cause trouble

regarding the error on exit, refer to my previous post on updating to GameX 5.09

Forum category: General / Design
Forum thread: Music

Ah right, I haven't uploaded my copy yet…

But on the note of deletions, there wasn't an unload for jollyrogerbay before, and MusicX doesn't really have a destroy/unload function, so I didn't include any for the new music. However, I did put in a pointer variable _current_music in the Board class. That might be the issue, would I need to safe_delete that?

Forum category: General / Design
Forum thread: Music

you know I was wondering why everything was suddenly so easy…

Who exactly turned up the per garden cash? What levels require it? Becuase as far as I knew most of the levels were made to work with it at the lower level, so I'm not sure how turning it up would be beneficial.

Before you increase the price of everything (hahaha… it's like our game has inflation), maybe it'd be fine just to return the tuner to its original level

Forum category: General / Design
Forum thread: Levels & Balancing

sigh *

Please note that hiking up the cash per garden rate, some maps that were meant to be more challenging in terms of resource management are now pushovers. In general, cash is never a problem on any of the levels anymore it seems. Right now I'm more worried about the music, but tomorrow when I can deal with level design and balancing again, some feedback on what we can do to keep resource management an interesting facet of our game would be much appreciated.

I'm thinking make stuff more expensive across the board, that way starting off with 100 cash is actually representative of scarcity.

Forum category: General / Design
Forum thread: Levels & Balancing

Maybe you weren't there the day mohan explained it…

He bascially told us that gamex will use the SAME code that we have in now. What it supposedly does is look for the WAV files with those titles first, but , not finding those, it will use the GXS files of the same name but different extension.

In other words, no code changes. You should just run the GXS converter and it should be fine

However, it's not. The game doesn't load most of the converted sounds correctly (though some it does).

Mohan says to be sure we're running the latest version of gamex, and if that still doesnt' work, not to worry about it. So if after you get the latest GameX still no luck, don't worry about it. We've got bigger fish to fry.

Forum category: General / Design
Forum thread: Music

Heh, I got so discouraged by the new music, I'm procrastinating by fiddling with the wav2gxs, and know how to use it now. ^^

==> And I guess it would be nice to tell you what it does wouldn't it… Well turns out that any .wav files IN, or is a IN A SUBDIRECTORY, of the folder you have wav2gxs.exe, once you run it it will automatically convert all those .wavs into .gxs. Kinda scary, because now I'm not sure what I've converted since I ran wav2gxs so many times at this point…

I guess our next step is to figure out how to implement the sounds? Would it be the same usual load code?

Forum category: General / Design
Forum thread: Music
